With the global influx of advanced technologies and the exponential growth of Southeast Asia’s urban centres, cities would undeniably face challenges as to their competitiveness, growth, and liveability. It is thus not surprising that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) initiated the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) which aims to build "smart and sustainable cities" in different cities across the region.
In this report, we provide a comprehensive overview of ASEAN’s ASCN, laying out its recent quantifiable developments, as well as an easily digestible framework that details the initiative’s progress in four areas, namely: i) network-building; ii) economic growth; iii) sustainability; and iv) inclusivity and localisation. Subsequently, the report also provides a brief analysis of how the ASCN may be further developed.
