Thailand's Cannabis Legalisation: Opportunities, Risks and Impact

On 9 June 2022, Thailand became the third country in the world to decriminalise cannabis – after Canada and Uruguay. This has attracted widespread attention in a country where the cultivation and consumption of cannabis was once considered an offence under the 1979 Narcotics Act.
Following the decriminalisation, individuals can now legally grow, sell or purchase cannabis seeds, plants, and inflorescence in Thailand without prior regulatory approval. We discuss the opportunities that Thailand's liberalised cannabis policy presents as well as risks and regional implications.
