Indonesia’s Ambitious Renewable Energy Goals - Challenges & The Path Ahead

In 2021, President Jokowi announced an ambitious carbon neutral target – Indonesia is to reach 23 percent renewable energy utilisation of its total energy utilisation by 2025 and net zero emissions by 2060. Indonesia plans to replace coal-fired power plants with new renewable energy power plants, accelerate the development of new renewable energy infrastructure, and develop the electric vehicle industry ecosystem. In this report, we highlight three challenges faced by Indonesia in its transition to achieve carbon neutrality.
