Indonesia takes on the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this 2023. With the theme, “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth,” it hopes to pioneer a framework that would strengthen peace and stability in the region and initiate a consistent approach to upholding human values and democracy. Along with these, President Jokowi pronounced that it aims to bring ASEAN towards rapid growth as an inclusive and sustainable economy by increasing its institutional capacity and effectiveness.
There is a lot at stake with Indonesia’s ASEAN chairmanship this 2023, not only for itself but the regional body as a whole. Coming from a successful Group of 20 (G20) presidency in 2022, diverse stakeholders are expecting Indonesia to do well and strengthen the regional bloc's relevance and institutional efficacy. However, the task remains daunting and there are a lot of challenges along the way.
