Indonesia and China's Deepening Economic Relations: Infrastructure & Renewable Energy Sectors

In November 2022, Indonesian President Jokowi successfully hosted the G20 Bali Summit, attended by world leaders including China President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden. Before the Summit, Xi and Jokowi also witnessed the trial run of the Jakarta-Bandung High Speed Railway (HSR), a key project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Jokowi hopes that the HSR will lead to increased mobility of goods and people, boosting Indonesia’s competitiveness.


While China and Indonesia’s economic cooperation would appear to be mutually beneficial, it remains to be seen whether China’s long-term geopolitical goals will continue to be aligned with Indonesia’s domestic and foreign policy goals, especially after Indonesia elects a new president in 2024.
