ESG Investing in Southeast Asia: Complexities of the Region's ESG Progress

In Southeast Asia alone, green investments reached USD 15 billion in cumulative investments since 2020. There has been an exponential growth in private and venture capital sustainability investments between 2020 and 2021, with a focus on sustainable solutions in the energy and agrifood sectors.


The growth in ESG awareness is in line with a stronger global commitment to address climate concerns. Governments in Southeast Asia have taken a proactive approach with regards to ESG-focused development. While the increased ESG uptake in the region could lead to investment opportunities, we discuss the challenges that could derail ESG progress in Southeast Asia.
