Data Privacy Protection in the Philippines: Braving The Challenges

Data privacy is rapidly becoming a priority for both businesses and states alike. As the global transition to digitalisation continues, and as entities from the public and private sectors gather, store, and trade billions of personal data, so too are governments pressured into creating a reliable and secure environment that caters to these entities’ need for protection.


The Philippines is a unique starting point for data privacy laws in Southeast Asia (SEA). It is one of the first states in the Asia Pacific which promulgated its data privacy laws. However, it continuously grapples with the increasing complexity of the challenges in the arena. It is in this regard that we attempt to trace the extent the Philippines has come to address the issue and what more needs to be done to eradicate the issue as a whole.
