Balancing between China and the United States: The Philippines' Priorities and Prospects

In May 2022, the Philippines concluded its presidential elections, with Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of late president Ferdinand Marcos Sr., winning with an overwhelming majority of 30 million votes. His victory has led to renewed discussions on the country’s foreign policy direction, especially as threats of an impending economic crisis alongside a slow post-pandemic recovery may compel collaboration with external powers.


Will Marcos Jr. sustain his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte’s policy of accommodation towards China, or will he pivot back to reviving ties with the United States (US)?
